mail build 5231

Where is Mail in Build 5231?

Must be blind or stupid, can't find it. Using Outlook Express, didn't know it existed till I saw it in the newsgroups.
Search finds two GIF files ... ?

Hi, Anonymous.
The Windows Mail name first appeared (for me) in Build 5270 of the Windows Vista Beta.
At the moment, I've dual-booted into WinXP and am running IE7/OE6.

Yeh, I can't remember where it first popped up, but it's definaltely in 5270 and it might well be in 5259 as well, as I remember looking at some screenshots :op

In that case, avoid a beta since it always can mess up your machine, even installed on another partition.
PS: pls start a new thread instead of hijacking the Mail Build 5231 thread...

If you install it on a separate partition, you won't have to worry much, just give the beta a minimum of 15GBs free space. It will take over your boot loader though, if you decide to format the partition and go back to Windows XP, you can restore the old boot manage by doing the following: Boot off your Windows XP CD, go to the recovery console. Execute FIXMBR and FIXBOOT commands

Go buy another hard drive and put it in instead of the current one. That way you can play with Vista when you want, then pop in the other drive for the family.
I've installed in on as little as a 15 gig drive

Windows Mail doesn't show up until build 5270, which came out just before Christmas, 2005. For now, you will have to get by with Outlook Express.
Oh, and by the way, Windows Mail is just an enhanced Outlook Express, but I really like it.

Base code is OE, not enough time in the world todo a totalrewrite, but no DBX files.

I love the filtered search, thats my favorite feature, makes quicker and easier to find e-mail. The Mail Store is also nice, quick and easy to back up, just copy the Mail store from the Windows Mail and you are done, import it on another PC running Windows Vista/Windows Mail and you are done. Hi, Tekguru.
Step One in any dual-boot setup is to create - or have already available - a separate volume (primary partition or logical drive on any HD in your computer), and install each operating system in a separate volume. So boot into WinXP, use Disk Management to create and format a new volume and assign it a "drive" letter. Then insert the Vista DVD-ROM and run its Setup from within WinXP. You can also create a dual-boot system automatically by booting from the Vista DVD-ROM. But in that case, Setup will not be able to read WinXP's Registry to discover the already-assigned drive letters, so it will start from scratch and assign letters according to its own rules - and those letters probably will NOT be what you expect!
Since your Sig says you are an MVP, you should be able to access the private NG:: microsoft.beta.longhorn.setup_and_migration. That NG is not yet echoed here in the public Vista NGs, but I hope it will be soon. We all need a lot of help to understand Vista's new Boot Configuration Data system and how to use it, especially in dual-boot systems.
For now, I suppose the most appropriate public NG for your new thread would be m.p.w.v.installation_setup.
